Welcome to the Peak Vitality Podcast

Today, we're exploring a topic that is deeply personal and incredibly important for so many women: how to biohack your fertility. Whether you’re starting your fertility journey, facing obstacles, or simply looking to optimize your reproductive health, this episode will provide you with actionable insights, inspiration, and hope. Let's dive in!

I’d like to start this episode by discussing some of the modern fertility challenges women face today, which are more prevalent today than ever before.

We’re seeing girls experience puberty as early as age 8 or 9, a rise in unexplained infertility, and sperm counts have drastically declined in recent decades. Environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and exposure to endocrine disruptors are contributing significantly to these trends.

Our diet and our lifestyle are having a significant impact on our reproductive health.

Chemicals found in plastics, cosmetics, pesticides, and even in our foods and water supply are affecting hormone levels, contributing to earlier puberty in girls and declining sperm counts in men.

Here are a few steps you can take to start minimizing the toxic exposure:

It's important to Avoid harmful junk foods, toxins and check where food is made, what it is made from and the ingredients.

Avoid sweeteners, glucose syrup seed oils, processed meats and breads, soda, preservatives, pesticides, plastics, BPA, genetically modified grains and sausages or bacon which contains toxic nitrates.

Reduce heavy metal consumption by eliminating certain fish like swordfish and fresh tuna.

Drink lots of water but don't drink tap water and only mineral water.

Avoid brown rice (lectines) and stick to colorful organic fruits and veg and farm-raised meats free from antibiotics and hormones.

Later on during this podcast I will share some actionable steps, tools & strategies you can use to improve your fertility holistically.

I didn’t get my period until I was nearly 18. Being a ballet dancer and an athlete, I was always pushing my body to its limits, always training, which contributed to a low percentage of body fat.

Later, after a hormone test and a scan I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), which taught me the importance of listening to my body and understanding how lifestyle, diet, and stress impacts your fertility.

I was put on the contraceptive pill to stabilize my ovaries, prevent any cyst and control any symptoms and I stayed on the pill until I was ready to start a family.

Later, Once I was married and started my fertility journey,  I took the first step of getting off the pill and ended up waiting months for a period that never came..

My Fertility journey pretty much spanned more than three decades of my life. It was a long, challenging, and often disheartening journey but I maintained a positive mindset and perseverance which are key to success.

In my first 17 year long marriage to my childhood sweetheart, I managed, with the help of various doctors and fertility boosters like Clomid, to have three beautiful children, which later on unfortunately ended up in a devastating divorce which took a toll on me physically, mentally and spiritually.

18 months later I met my now husband Adrian. We traveled the world and started dreaming of our own family.   At that time I was a single mom of three (my daughter was three at the time) and my body was a mess. My hair was falling out, I had 8% body fat, was punishing myself at the gym and had terrible panic attacks.

I knew this would be an uphill battle and I needed to change my lifestyle, fitness routine, diet, self-care, sleep and mindset if I were ever to conceive again.

This realization marked the beginning of my biohacking journey to optimize my ovaries and overall reproductive health. I started researching how to support my body’s unique needs, manage my PCOS , balance my hormones, improve my fertility and my chances of conceiving.

I decided to take my first step of getting my hormones checked (estrogen, progesterone & testosterone) as well as FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) and AMH (anti-Mullerian hormone which helps reveal a person's egg count) plus an ultrasound to understand my body. I also tested for allergies, blood type, and started researching PCOS and amenorrhea more.

It’s crucial to identify any imbalances or issues that could be affecting your fertility.

I realized I needed to stop running excessively, reduce stress, gain weight, and nurture my body which was essential for balancing my hormones.

I incorporated dietary changes, like including more healthy fats such as grass fed butter, olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, and addressing any nutrient deficiencies to improve my fertility.

After Adrian moved in we froze eggs and embryos.

However, I faced some obstacles, as most of the eggs didn't survive the freezing, so we used  a combination of fresh or frozen eggs and/or embryos  at various clinics. My first time I had 20 eggs but not that many fertilized. As I had been on the pill most of my life, that prevented me from ovulating. I had eggs but needed to check the quality of the eggs.

The second major obstacle was the implantation, because I had multiple polyps and fibroids developed with the treatment, which led to three separate surgeries and failed attempts.. .

Even despite all the obstacles I remained committed to my goal.

We decided to take a break and get married.

At one point, I nearly gave up, but then found a clinic with a surrogacy program which said ‘you will Go home with a baby.’ We decided to sign up for five more cycles and a Surrogate if we needed it. I believe they gave me the peace of mind I needed.

And instead of saying go back to work, go have a glass of wine, and take a test in two weeks. They sent me home with extra estrogen and progesterone, b6 and magnesium and told me to stay in bed the first few days and it worked.. I was pregnant with twins!

It’s a reminder that the journey might be tough, but perseverance and finding the right medical support can make all the difference.

It’s also important to mention some of the options, like surrogacy, that women can consider when facing challenges during IVF.

Surrogacy is one option if a woman cannot carry a pregnancy to term, but there are many other approaches too. Every journey is unique, and it’s crucial to explore different clinics, doctors, and protocols until you find the right solution that works for your body and situation.

There are ART assisted reproductive technologies which prolong your ability to have a baby later in life such as embryo freezing, ivf, embryos using your DNA put into a younger woman's egg, all kinds of advancements.

Whether you’re attempting IVF or trying to conceive naturally, Preparing your body is essential. Lifestyle changes and a positive mindset play a crucial role in fertility.

One of the biggest keys apart from nutrition, which I’ll speak about shortly, to preparing my body for motherhood was learning how to manage my stress holistically.

Stress is one of the biggest enemies of fertility. Chronic stress can disrupt hormone balance and reduce your chances of conception.

Some of the great ways you can enhance your chances of conceiving are methods like acupuncture, massage, castor oil packs, guided visualizations, gentle exercises like yoga and walks in nature to improve blood flow to my reproductive organs.

It still was not an easy road, I had several miscarriages, two D & C’s and many failed attempts on various protocols with various doctors. But what kept me sane and kept me going, was my positive mindset - and that is why I truly believe why having a strong mindset is so important on this journey.  I've been giving coaching to several friends with fertility issues.. Giving them the protocol and supplements before, during and after STIMMS and the all important two week wait.  But most importantly it's vital to have the right mindset and truly believe you will have a baby.

Don't listen to one doctor or five doctors if they turn you away. If you're too old or complicated, keep going until you find the right doctor and the Right clinic and convince yourself that you will go home with the baby.

Start early! Listen to your body and nourish your body.

So having said that - let’s dive into the part of my fertility journey that truly made the MOST REMARKABLE difference to my story!

Something that many women aren’t aware of nor are supported by the medical establishment is the fact that NUTRITION is one of the most powerful tools for optimizing your fertility.

Balancing hormones and addressing nutritional deficiencies were one of the keys to improving my fertility, overcoming PCOS and amenorrhea.

These adjustments allowed me to biohack my body to create the ideal conditions for conception.

Eat a variety of nutrient-rich foods—think rainbow-colored veggies, organic fruits, lean protein, healthy fats, and whole grains. Incorporate fertility superfoods like flaxseeds, nuts, sweet potatoes, avocados, and coconut oil.

For example, I added flaxseeds containing lignans that help balance estrogen, while Brazil nuts are high in selenium, which is essential for healthy eggs and sperm.

I started consuming more eggs and farm raised meats, full fat yogurt, and cottage cheese.

Maca is another powerful superfood that can help regulate hormones. Additionally, drinking bone broth can support gut health, which plays a significant role in hormone regulation.

Eliminating processed foods, alcohol, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats is also crucial for maintaining hormone balance and optimizing fertility.

Noting low-fat, no alcohol, and nothing with anything but wholesome ingredients.

I also used holistic remedies such as juicing. I took many supplements like Myo- inositol to help insulin resistance, regulate menstrual cycles, improve egg quality and chances of ovulation.

Let’s get into some practical steps and supplement recommendations for anyone looking to optimize their fertility.

First of course, get yourself tested - do your female profile, plus thyroid FSH, AMH, to check for any underlying conditions that might stop you getting pregnant, check your BMI and don’t leave the self-care to the last minute.

Start months before to prepare your body and improve the quality of your eggs.

Here are some of the key supplements I would recommend to include to enhance your own fertility naturally.

  1. During IVF Treatments: CoQ10, DHEA, melatonin, alpha-lipoic acid, myo-inositol, omega-3 fish oil, selenium, vitamin C, and prenatal vitamins.

These help improve egg quality and support hormones.

  • After Embryo Transfer (2-week wait): A Pineapple core, bone broth, Brazil nuts, and warm foods to support implantation.
  1. DHEA in particular improves pregnancy rates by increasing egg quality and ovarian response by increasing the number of embryos produced,  improving the quality of produced embryos, as well as your endometrial function and reducing rates of misscarriage.  So if you have diminished ovarian reserve from chronic stress , adrenal or autoimmune issues or age dhea is a fantastic supplement to add into your routine.

Always consult with your doctor before starting any supplement regimen.

I often get asked about what advice would I give to women beginning their fertility journey or facing IVF challenges?

Every fertility journey is unique, and it’s important to approach it with a sense of empowerment and hope.

Never give up, even if the road is tough. Listen to your body, nourish it with the right foods, and be open to exploring different methods, doctors, and clinics. Advocate for yourself, educate yourself, and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve your dream of motherhood.  You have the power to biohack your fertility and improve your chances for conception.

Start by getting your hormones tested, understand your body, and take charge of your health. Use nutrition, supplements, holistic practices, and seek out the right support system.

Remember, you have more control over your fertility than you might think.

I would finally like to discuss an exciting breakthrough in biohacking fertility—a study from Colombia using the immunosuppressant Rapamycin, and how it can  influence fertility and extend ovarian health.

This particular study showed that Rapamycin could reduce ovarian aging by up to 20%, potentially delaying menopause by up to five years!

This means slowing down ovarian aging, extending fertility, and reducing the risk of age-related diseases like heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis.

While it's not widely available yet, it’s an exciting development that could significantly impact fertility treatments and women's health in the future.

I hope by tuning into this episode you feel more empowered & knowledgeable to start your journey to improving your fertility holistically!
